Also pair of forceps. A pair of pincers, usually held in one hand to obtain a firm grip on a small object, esp. in surgery or anatomical dissection, or in entomology. Also, in obstetrics, a large two-bladed instrument designed to encircle and pull upon the baby's head to assist delivery. L16.
Zoology. An organ or part of the body that has the shape of, or may be used as, a forceps, e.g. the cerci of earwigs. Formerly also, either of the two branches of this. M17.
