A familial disorder characterised by increased plasma concentration of cholesterol carried in low density lipoproteins (ldl) and by a deficiency in a cell surface receptor which regulates ldl degradation and cholesterol synthesis. It is frequently associated with arcus senilis and premature atherosclerosis.
