amomum (iou)

amomum noun. LME.
[Latin name of some aromatic shrub, from Greek amomon.]
An aromatic plant belonging to the genus Amomum, of the ginger family.
? The name was used orig. for a variety of spice plants, the amomum of the ancients being of uncertain identity. The genus Amomum has also been reduced: it formerly included all cardamoms (most now Elettaria) and grains of Paradise (now Aframomum).
