Linguistics. In Greek, the pronunciation of the vowel eta as, or the reduction of various vowels and diphthongs to, the sound [i:] (represented in classical Greek by the letter iota); (an instance of) the erroneous substitution in Greek manuscripts of iota for another vowel or diphthong. Cf. IOTACISM.
