A genus of the family reoviridae infecting vertebrates only. Transmission is horizontal and infected species include humans, birds, cattle, monkeys, sheep, swine, and bats. Reovirus 1, reovirus 2, and reovirus 3 infect mammals. Reovirus 1 is the type species.
