Burn - Poker (gambling)

1) To deal off the top card, face down, before dealing out the cards (to prevent cheating).

2) To set aside a card which has been inadvertently revealed.

A 'burn card' is a card discarded from the top of the deck at predetermined points in deals (in case a player has seen it). In card Games after a shuffle and cut, one card is placed on the bottom of the deck or in the discard tray, which is called burning the card.

In order to reduce the chances of players getting advance information about cards to come, in many Poker Games the top card on the deck is discarded at certain pre-determined points in the dealing process (e.g., in hold'em, before the flop, turn, and river). These cards are the burn cards. In General, any time a card is discarded from the top of the deck it's called a burn card.
