P-Aminobenzenesulfonamide;the first sulfonamide used for its chemotherapeutic effect in infections caused by some beta-haemolytic streptococci, meningococci, gonococci, Clostridium welchii, and in certain infections of the urinary tract, especially those due to Escherichia coli and Proteus vulgaris; less effective than sulfapyridine in the treatment of pneumococcic, staphylococcic, and Klebsiella pneumoniae infections.
