sulphite preservative
<pharmacology> A widely used preservative and antioxidant in foods. Often used to keep lettuce fresh.

It is also common in packaged potato products, as well as other produce, certain types of seafood and even in beer and wine. They are currently used in over 1,000 drug products both prescription and nonprescription.

Common label names: sulphur dioxide, potassium bisulphite, potassium metabisulphite, sodium metabisulphite or sodium sulphite.
