Buy - Poker (gambling)


1) As in "buy the pot." To bluff, hoping to "buy" the pot without being called.


2) As in "buy the button." To bet or raise, hoping to make players between you and the button fold, thus allowing you to act last on subsequent Betting rounds.


3) In draw Poker, receive one or more cards. "What did you buy on the draw?" means "What card or cards did you receive?"


4) Purchase chips.



To buy a pot is to make a bet large enough that Other players would be unlikely to call.

To buy the button in flop Games is to raise before the flop in order to induce the players with better position than yourself to fold. If everyone closer to the button folds, you've bought the button. Obviously this works better the closer to the button you start out.
