Geneva Convention, the (oh)



a set of agreements that establish rules for how people should be treated during wars, especially if they are wounded or taken prisoner. The Geneva Convention was first written in Geneva, Switzerland, in the 19th century and was accepted by most countries. It has been changed several times at later international meetings.

A voucher issued in the royal household or by government enabling the recipient to claim the sum due for goods or Services rendered. arch. LME.
b. A certificate authorizing the repayment of import duty on goods which are re-exported. M17.

A certificate of a loan made to the government. E18-E19.
A sealed bond issued by a corporation or company in respect of a long-term (esp. fixed-interest) loan, the principal of which, in Britain, constitutes a charge on the assets of the company. M19.
Comb.: debenture bond = sense 4 above; debenture stock company stock comprising debentures, with only the interest secured.
