Work (medicine)

work
<chemistry> Energy transferred by mechanical means, force acting over a distance. For chemical systems the sign for work is positive, if work is done on the system and negative, if work is done by the system. An example is the expansion of a gas against the external, atmospheric pressure. In this case work is negative, because it is done by the gas which represents the system.
