Chesapeake (sh)




City (pop., 2000: 199,184), southeastern Virginia, U.S. Located south of Norfolk, it was formed as an independent city in 1963 by the merger of Norfolk county and the city of South Norfolk.

Its area of 341 sq mi (883 sq km) is one of the largest of U.S. cities. Encompassing part of Dismal Swamp, it was once the Home of the Chesapeake Indians and was settled by colonists in the 1630s.
