Jamison, Judith (sh)




born May 10, 1943, Philadelphia, Pa., U.S.

U.S. dancer and choreographer.

In 1965 she joined Alvin Ailey's American Dance Theater; she became celebrated for her energetic grace and riveting stage presence and inspired many of Ailey's new dances, most notably Cry (1971). She left the company in 1980 to star in the Broadway musical Sophisticated Ladies. She toured worldwide in the 1980s and choreographed for various companies. In 1988 she founded her own troupe, the Jamison Project, but, after Ailey's death in 1989, she returned to the Ailey troupe as artistic director, becoming the first African American woman to direct a major modern Dance company.

a. The action of laying something down in layers, esp. (in tanning, chemistry, etc.) in alternating layers of two materials intended to act one on the Other. E17-L19.
b. The placing of seeds close together in moist sand, peat, etc., esp. in layers, to preserve them or promote germination. E20.
The formation, by a natural process, of strata or layers one above the Other; spec. the formation of strata in the earth's crust by successive deposits of sediment; the fact or state of existing in the form of strata, stratified condition; the manner in which a thing, esp. a part of the earth's crust, is stratified. b. Electricity. The striated appearance assumed by an electric discharge passing through a highly rarefied gas; each of the striations. Now rare or obsolete. M19.
c. Sociology. The formation and establishment of social or cultural levels resulting from differences in occupation and political, ethnic, or economic influence. M19.
