Murrumbidgee River (sh)




River, southeastern New South Wales, Australia.

The major right-bank tributary of the Murray River, it flows west from the Great Dividing Range near Canberra to join the Murray 140 mi (224 km) from the Victoria border; it is 980 mi (1,578 km) long. Small vessels can navigate it for about 500 mi (800 km) in the rainy season. The Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area involves more than 1,000 sq mi (2,600 sq km) of farmland and supports livestock pastures, grapes, citrus fruits, wheat, cotton, and rice.
