City (pop., 2000: 545,524), capital of Tennessee, U.S. It is located on the Cumberland River.
Founded in 1779 as Nashborough, it was incorporated as the town of Nashville in 1784. It became a city in 1806 and the state capital in 1843. During the American Civil War, it was occupied by Federal troops (1862). The war's last major battle (1864) took place outside the city. It is a financial and commercial centre, producing shoes, clothing, glass, and tires. Important industries include printing, publishing, and recording. Well known for country and western music, it is the site of Opryland U.S.A. and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. It is the home of many universities, including Vanderbilt and Fisk.
