Paraiba do Sul River (sh)

River, eastern Brazil.

It is formed by the confluence of the Parahitinga and Paraibuna rivers east of S?o Paulo; it flows northeast and forms part of the border between Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro states before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean after a course of about 600 mi (965 km). Its lower course is navigable, and it plays a vital role in Brazil's social and economic life.
